All structures (buildings, bridges, highways, walls, towers or dams) are placed on the surface of the earth. The loads of the structures are transferred to the soil through the footings. If the soil surface is firm, the footing of the structure will consist of spread footings. However, if the surface soil is soft the weight of the structure is transferred through the soft zone into the firm zone by piles or deepened foundation.

Soil Engineers choose treatment of the soil (compaction) since economically it is more feasible due to high cost associated with the deep foundations or piles.

Advanced Geotechniques uses the process described in the figure that insures the client proper and economical service.
